Background of the Study
Political party membership is a critical indicator of political participation and inclusion. However, in many parts of Nigeria, including Lafia Local Government Area in Nasarawa State, a significant gender gap exists in terms of political party membership (Nwogu & Bello, 2024). Women are often underrepresented in political party structures, and their participation is limited by factors such as socio-cultural expectations, lack of political networks, and limited access to resources (Ali & Adebayo, 2023). This study aims to examine the gender gap in political party membership in Lafia, exploring the factors contributing to this disparity and the implications for political representation and participation.

The gender gap in political party membership in Lafia Local Government Area continues to limit women’s political representation and their ability to influence political decisions. Despite various policies aimed at increasing women’s political participation, the gap persists, largely due to cultural beliefs, gender stereotypes, and structural barriers within political parties themselves (Abdullahi & Suleiman, 2025). This study seeks to investigate the reasons behind the gender gap in political party membership in Lafia and its impact on women’s political participation and leadership.
